EQAT CALL TO ACTION TO STOP TAR SANDS PIPELINE
President Obama has the authority to block the Keystone XL pipeline from being built in the U.S. to link Canadian tar sands oil to Louisiana refineries. If Obama says “Yes” to approving the pipeline, the consequences for our planet are dire. America’s foremost climate scientist (NASA’s James Hanson) says the tar sands are so vast that it will mean “game over” for the way humans have been able to live on this planet.
Earth Quaker Action Team (EQAT) joins 350.org in urging Friends and others to act now. Even while we continue our own campaign --Bank Like Appalachia Matters! (BLAM!) --we are taking the extra stretch at this time to mobilize for the 350.org action Feb 17 in Washington, D.C. Why?
-
Obama is being pressured by “big oil”, U.S. Chamber of Commerce and other powerful lobbying groups to approve the pipeline. His decision is anticipated shortly. Everyone must act within this window of time to demonstrate public opposition to the project! To remain silent is to concede that dirty tar sands oil is the answer to our energy needs—and it is not! (To learn more about the pipeline read Bill McKibben’s thoughtful articles available on 350.org.)
-
Quakers have already been arrested with over a thousand people in a previous 350.org tar sands action in Washington, which resulted in Obama delaying his decision. He needs to hear from us now in large numbers to make his opposition possible.
-
Other faith groups and major environmental organizations are joining the February 17 action, recognizing that at this moment we must pull together and that nonviolent direct action works.
-
EQAT agrees with Bill McKibben that the fossil fuels industry must be targeted along with the banks. We must hold them responsible for hurricane Sandy and all the disasters they are fueling, including mountaintop removal coal mining. We must learn to act together when our strategies converge!
-
There’s a chance we can win. Within 24 hours of 350.org’s announcing the February action, thousands signed up. EQAT and our supporters can help to swell these numbers!
EQAT will help you find or organize buses from PA/NJ/DE to the White House on Sunday, Feb 17. Take your family and friends with you. Fill out and mail the coupon below, or go on-line to register at EQAT.org.

What to Bring on the 17th
Let’s have a great day on the 17th! We will provide some instructions for the day, song-leaders, a short DVD to watch, and the bus. Here’s what you should do:
BRING: filled water bottles, your lunch and snacks, a charged cell phone, EQAT or green T-shirt if you have one, safety pins to attach your shirt to your coat, any medicines you normally take, tissues (it’s cold season) pen or pencil.
WEAR: comfortable shoes for standing or walking, umbrellas if there is a chance of rain, layers of clothing, gloves, hats.
OPTIONAL: Signs and posters, cash to purchase a T-shirt ($20), portable musical instruments, songbooks, pillow, headache medicine (be prepared!)
There will be bathrooms on all buses and port-a-potties in DC. The bus will not stop at rest areas. Plan to bring all the food and water you’ll need for the day with you. Buses will be locked during the rally and march, so it will be possible to leave items on the bus for the return trip.
